Portugal, again, against the majority of the European Union

Bernardo Blanco*

While most European Union countries do not have mostly public airlines, Portugal nationalizes TAP and now holds 72.5% of a highly indebted company. While most European countries only supported airlines due to the crisis caused by the search for flights by the pandemic covid-19, Portugal has been subsidizing an airline that has had financial problems for a long time. The Liberal Initiative was the only party that said from the beginning and without any doubt not to this operation.

While most countries in the European Union have made loans to airlines that, according to the expected accounts, will be paid in a few years, Portugal will “lend” at least 1200 million in TAP during a crisis and the new Minister of Finance already assumes that the money will not be returned in full. The Liberal Initiative was the only party that warned the Portuguese in advance that the money would not return, as the Government was selling in the media.
