Medication has no visible antiviral effects on human cells
The administration of hydroxychloroquine for the treatment of covid-19 has no visible antiviral effects in human cells, despite some response in tests carried out on monkeys, according to a study published in the scientific journal Nature.
According to the group of researchers responsible for the research, “hydroxychloroquine showed antiviral activity in renal cells of the African green monkey, but not in a model of human airway epithelium”. Therefore, the research defends, in the conclusions, “not to support its use as an antiviral agent for the treatment of covid-19 in humans”.
The negative assessment of the effects of this substance on humans comes after being used in several countries as a therapy for inpatients. Hydroxychloroquine gained special media coverage when the President of the United States, Donald Trump, assumed to take it prophylactically and because the head of State of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, announced that he was taking it after being infected with the new coronavirus.
