USA: About 40% of Covid-19 infections are asymptomatic

About 40% of positive COVID-19 cases were symptom-free, according to the latest “COVID-19 Pandemic Planning Scenarios” from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The document, which the agency said can be used to estimate the possible effects of COVID-19 on U.S. states and regions, was first published on May 20. The July 10 update is based on data received by the CDC until June 29.

The new percentage of asymptomatic infections, under the CDC’s “best current estimate”, is above the 35% estimated by the agency on May 20.

In addition, according to the agency’s best current estimate, an asymptomatic individual is 75% as infectious as a symptomatic individual.

“Asymptomatic cases are challenging to identify, because people do not know they are infected unless they are tested, which is usually only done systematically as part of a scientific study,” said the CDC.
