Portugal confirms humanitarian flight from Maputo to Lisbon on 11 July

Filipe Sousa

The Portuguese Embassy in Maputo confirmed, in an official statement, a humanitarian flight in support of the return of citizens affected by the closure of borders, departing from Maputo and heading to Lisbon on 11 July.

The announcement, made this Wednesday, comes after the approval of the Mozambican president, Filipe Nyusi, at the Portuguese request, on July 6, for the realization of a humanitarian flight. The return of citizens from Maputo to Lisbon will take place on July 11th.

The flight, which will be carried out by TAP, is intended for Portuguese or European citizens who, because they need to travel for health reasons, permanent departure from the country or because they are temporary travelers, justified the need to reserve a seat for the 11th day. Other citizens , without reasons of proven urgency, but which meet the legal conditions necessary to travel to Portugal, they may also, in a second phase, seek to purchase a ticket through TAP’s usual booking channels, subject to availability of seats.

The Portuguese government expressed confidence in the resumption of flights between Lisbon and Maputo and said that it is available to guarantee the return to Mozambique of citizens and legal residents, always respecting the rules of the state of emergency in force.

Portugal also made it clear that, considering the exceptions to the closure of airspace currently in force, it intends to “maintain the possibility of flights between Portugal and Mozambique on a reciprocal basis”.
