More than 150 intellectuals, writers and artists in the US and other countries have signed an open letter lamenting an “atmosphere of intolerance” coming from “all sides”, not only from the radical right, and a censorship that promotes public humiliation, in allusion to the “culture of cancellation” – boycott people and brands with views and behavior considered inappropriate.
Among the 153 signatories to the manifesto, released on Tuesday (7), are linguist Noam Chomsky, writers JK Rowling, Salman Rushdie, Andrew Solomon and Margaret Atwood (author of “The Tale of the Maid”), feminist activist Gloria Steinem, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and political scientist Yascha Mounk, a columnist for Folha.
