Former Cape Verde minister is Guterres’ new adviser for Africa

Cristina Duarte succeeds Bience Gawanas, from Namibia. She has 34 years of experience and has headed the Finance and Planning ministery in her country.

Cristina Duarte is the new advisor for Africa to the UN secretary general, António Guterres. Prior to this new role, she was a member of the UN Committee of Experts on Public Administration and the Governing Council for Economic and Social Affairs, chaired by the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame.

She held positions in the government of Cape Verde from 2006 to 2016. Before starting her political career, she directed a World Bank project for the private sector and was director of planning and studies at the Ministry of Agriculture of her country. She also worked in Kenya as manager of institutional and financial relations for Citibank, becoming vice president of the institution in the African country, according to his profile published on the UN website.
