China promises retaliation if U.S. imposes sanctions in Hong Kong

The central government of China and the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (RAEHK) will undoubtedly retaliate if the United States imposes sanctions, Zhang Xiaoming, deputy director of the State Department’s Affairs Department, promised on Wednesday Hong Kong and Macau.

Some people in the United States have crossed the line by engaging in a new round of bullying, Zhang said at a press conference.

RAEHK’s special economic status, including its position as a global financial center, has been won by decades of hard work by generations of people in Hong Kong, recalled Zhang, emphasizing that this status is recognized by the world and is also supported by the Basic Law of RAEHK.

Hong Kong’s long-term prosperity and stability depends on comparative advantages in the business environment, the financial system, the impetus for economic development on the mainland and support from central authorities, Zhang said.

“We are totally confident in the future of Hong Kong,” he emphasized.
