Racism in Portugal has the subtlety of “soft Portuguese”

A debate on racism “can only be positive”, defends the president of APAV, who thinks that racism in Portugal has the subtlety of “soft Portuguese” and fears that the moment will benefit totalitarian, populist and undemocratic objectives.

Thousands took to the streets, in Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra, at the beginning of the month, in protest against racism, motivated mainly by the death of African American George Floyd in the USA and by the wave of protests that followed him in the country, but “ with one foot ”in the discussion that the country continues to avoid, that of the existence of latent racism in Portuguese society, which invariably leads to a division between those who think it exists and those who think the opposite.
