Japan starts testing Covid-19 vaccine in humans

Japanese pharmaceutical company Agnes announced on Thursday that it will begin testing a potential genetic vaccine against covid-19 in humans next week, with the aim of being able to produce it on a large scale in 2021.

The company will begin clinical trials to obtain authorization from a panel of health experts at Osaka University Hospital (western Japan), which collaborates with the project, after successfully testing the vaccine in mice, it said in a statement.

The vaccine, the first targeted at covid-19 to be tested in humans in Japan, contains DNA modified to encode the proteins of the new coronavirus, to which the patient’s immune system will respond by generating antibodies against the disease.
