Dog meat festival could trigger another epidemic

Eduardo Pedrosa da Costa

The traditional Chinese Yulin festival that promotes the consumption of dog meat is causing controversy among the population. Still with outbreaks of covid-19 in the country and despite government laws to control the livestock markets, the festival will take place.

The event has been a Chinese tradition since 2009, but it is estimated that the consumption of dog meat has been a habit for about 400 years. The Chinese believe that eating this animal, especially in the summer months, improves health, luck and may even increase men’s sexual performance.

However, holding the Yulin Festival, held in the city to which he stole the name, can bring about anything but good health. Du Yufeng, a Chinese animal rights activist, explained to CBS News that few people wear masks and that the event could motivate the spread of a new virus. When asked if they learned anything from the covid-19 pandemic, producers replied that “they are not breaking any laws”.
