South African Armed Forces can be sent to Cabo Delgado

The interest of the neighboring power of Mozambique in annihilating the terrorists who are spreading chaos in the province has two focuses: regional security and investment by a South African multinational in the exploitation of natural gas

The South African government may be preparing to send its military to the province of Cabo Delgado, in northern Mozambique, to help the neighboring country to get rid of the terrorist threat that has already caused more than a thousand deaths, about 250,000 displaced people and 2 million people affected at the border level.

According to The Africa Report, South Africa is focused on the activities of the radical Islamic group Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jammah, known locally as Al Shabaab, but who has no ties to Somali militias with the same name. This group intends to build its own mosques and madrassas (Islamic schools) to spread its radical dogma. The analysis in this in-depth article is done by Professor of Political Science Theo Neethling, from the University of The Free State.

The article states that a South African group of security consultants, the Dyck Advisory Group, will be supporting the Mozambican government in the Cabo Delgado dossier. South Africa’s interest in the conflict, which appears to be beyond the control of Mozambique’s government forces, is based on two focuses: regional security and economic interests.

The South African multinational Sasol, a petrochemical company, has invested heavily in the exploration of natural gas projects in Cabo Delgado since 2014, says the article in the Thje Africa Report. The issue of border security is also essential for South Africa. For decades, this African power has been receiving an illegal flow of thousands of Mozambicans, saturated with the difficult economic conditions in their country. The problem is that the neighboring country is also currently experiencing a huge economic and unemployment crisis and is unable to accommodate more fleeing Mozambicans.
