Jacob Zuma trial postponed again to September

The start of the trial of former South African President Jacob Zuma, accused in a bribery case over 20 years old, was again postponed, this time to September 8.

Zuma, 78, who led the most industrialized economy in sub-Saharan Africa between 2009 and 2018, has been accused for 20 years of earning 04 million rand, about 216 thousand euros, in commissions paid by the French company Thales, within the scope of an arms contract awarded in 1999, but both parties have always denied the charges.

Today, after a brief hearing at the Pietermaritzburg court in the north of the country, Judge Kate Pillay called the parties to a new hearing on September 8.

Today’s postponement follows two more postponements this year, in February and May, the first because of health problems, and the second because of the covid-19 pandemic.

Jacob Zuma was forced to step down as President of South Africa in February 2018, due to the various corruption scandals that tarnished his term, having been succeeded by Cyril Ramaphosa.
