No evidence has been found that the new coronavirus is spread by eating food, including seafood, epidemiologist Feng Luzhao said on Friday in response to public concerns about the safety of fresh produce.
Studies show that the new coronavirus is most commonly transmitted through respiratory droplets and close contacts, said the researcher at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, at a news conference in Beijing.
He added that another risk comes from prolonged exposure to concentrated aerosols in a relatively closed environment.
Despite a small chance of transmission through the digestive tract, Feng suggested sanitizing food, treating food properly and disinfecting kitchen and tableware as precautions.
