Anna França*

More than a billion people worldwide suffer from this severe chronic headache, according to WHO. In Brazil, 15% of the population suffers from the disease, which mainly affects females

What do Julio César, Napoleão Bonaparte, Friedrich Nietzsche, João Cabral de Melo Neto, Sigmund Freud, Madame de Pompadour and Thomas Jefferson have in common? Apparently nothing, but everyone, in their time, suffered from the same silent evil: migraine. The suffering of the poet João Cabral was such that he even made an ode to a painkiller that helped him a lot in the poem “Monumento à Aspirina” (Aspirin Monument).

But the geniuses are not alone. About one billion people in the world live with this disease, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO). It is a veritable legion of sufferers. In Brazil, a survey carried out by the research institute HSR Health and obtained exclusively by Istoé showed that 15% of the population has the disease. In other words, more than 31 million people suffer from pain. And among women this percentage may even double, due to hormonal factors, which causes two to three attacks per month.
