Macao with mandatory quarantine for those arriving from Beijing

Macau today announced the imposition of mandatory quarantine on entry into the territory to whom in the last 14 days has been in Beijing, at a time when the Chinese capital is experiencing an outbreak of covid-19.

“From 12:00 pm (05:00 in Lisbon) on June 17 [today], all individuals who in the last 14 days prior to entry into Macao will be subject to medical observation for a period of 14 days,” the Macau Government said.

“Offenders may be subject to the mandatory isolation measure, in addition to possible criminal liability,” the authorities said.

This decision by the Chinese special administrative region follows a new wave of cases by covid-19 in Beijing, which has registered 137 new cases in the last five days.

The infections are related to the main supply market in the Chinese capital, which had not diagnosed a case for almost two months.

In the last 24 hours, China has diagnosed 44 new cases of covid-19, including 31 in Beijing.

This new wave ended 18 consecutive days without registration of local broadcasts in China and a series of 56 consecutive days without local contagion in Beijing.

Meanwhile, Beijing’s two airports have already cancelled more than 1,000 air connections as a whole, state media reported.

On Tuesday, Beijing urged its 21 million residents to avoid “non-essential” trips out of the city and ordered the closure of primary, middle and higher schools.

Since April 9, Macao has not recorded cases of covid-19, and the last patient was discharged from hospital on April 19.

The covid-19 pandemic has claimed more than 438,000 lives and affected more than eight million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by French news agency AFP.
