Cape Verde preserves and identifies images of saints discovered in the Old City

Cape Verdean archaeologists were surprised by the discovery of images of saints during an excavation in the Gothic Chapel of the Nossa Senhora do Rosário Church, in the Old City, and say that the next step is the conservation and identification of the material.

“The important thing now is to conserve the images and, based on the decorative elements that help us for the iconography of saints, we are going to identify which saint,” Nireida Pereira, archaeologist at the Institute for Cultural Heritage (IPC) told Lusa. Tavares.

Last week, the IPC announced that, as part of an emergency intervention in the Gothic Chapel of the Nossa Senhora do Rosário Church, in the Old City, images of saints were discovered during an excavation.

The technician at that institute said that the discovery was made by electricians, when they were installing the electrical network in the chapel, which is about 500 years old, whose ongoing restoration is financed by the Camões Institute.
