Spain recorded 367 deaths in the last 24 hours due to the new coronavirus, the lowest daily number since March 20, with a total of 22,524 deaths so far, according to the country’s health authorities.
According to the Spanish Ministry of Health, there are 2,796 new positive cases, bringing the total infected to 202,990.
The daily figures also indicate that in the last 24 hours there are 3,105 people cured after they contracted the disease, with a total of 92,355 since the beginning of the pandemic.
For the first time since the beginning of the epidemic in Spain, today the number of new people cured (3,105) is higher than the number of new positive cases (2,796).
The director of the Health Alert and Emergency Services of the Ministry of Health, Fernando Simón, in the press conference where he updates the situation in Spain, stressed that these are the best numbers “since a few weeks ago”.
The region with the most positive cases confirmed by PCR test is Madrid, with 58,191 infected and 7,765 dead, followed by Catalonia (45,544 and 4,393), Castile and Leon (15,692 and 1,612), Castile-La Mancha (15,365 and 2,255) and that of the Basque Country (11,881 and 1,193).
The rate of daily coronavirus deaths has dropped from an average of more than 500 last week to an average of 400 this week, with the number of newly infected and hospitalized people also slowing down.
Spain will extend for a further two weeks, starting on Sunday and until May 9, the state of emergency in force since March 15.
“Slow and gradual”
The Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has already warned that the survey of the measures adopted to fight the coronavirus will be “slow and gradual” and should only start from the second half of May, hoping that until then the false steps will be avoided.
Madrid only allows people who cannot do it from home to go to work or to purchase or consume essential goods (food, banking, pharmacy, post office).
Even so, starting next Sunday, children up to 14 years old can leave the house for an hour a day, accompanied by an adult.
Accompanied minors will be able to move up to a maximum of one kilometer from their home with their own toys, but they will not be able to go to a playground or play with other children.
Spain is the second country with the most deaths from the pandemic per million inhabitants (482 deaths), after Belgium (576) and before Italy (423) and France (335), in a list in which the United States has 152 and Portugal 80.
Globally, according to an AFP report, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 190,000 deaths and infected more than 2.6 million people in 193 countries and territories.
Faced with a decrease in new patients in intensive care and contagion, some countries have meanwhile started to develop plans to reduce confinement and in some cases, such as Denmark, Austria, Spain or Germany, to relieve some of the measures.
