“Future of Portuguese language is in Africa, Brazil”

Lusa

The President of Cabo Verde, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, said on Thursday that the future of the Portuguese language is in Africa and Brazil, advocating its use in international organizations.

In a message regarding the celebration of the World Day of the Portuguese Language, which is celebrated on May 5th for the first time, the Head of State, who holds the rotating presidency of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), highlighted that Portuguese is spoken in eight countries, on four continents, by more than 250 million people.

“If the past made it the language of the first globalization, today Portuguese is one of the most used languages on the Internet and social networks, which gives it a global importance and reinforces its role in the future. The future is very much about its expansion outside Europe, particularly in Africa and Brazil,” he stressed.

On the importance of promoting the language, Fonseca recalled that the city of Praia hosts the headquarters of the International Portuguese Language Institute (IILP): “An important organization whose efforts for its promotion and expansion should be recognized and supported by all of us”.

The decision to establish the World Day of the Portuguese Language was ratified last November by UNESCO, with the acting president of the CPLP “launching the appeal” for the future of May 5.

“A day of multiple activities and initiatives to promote and disseminate this language of ours. Let us establish a network of activities, in various cities, bringing together state bodies, private individuals, schools, institutes, and let us design a true Language Festival, with the participation of teachers and writers,” he urged.

Jorge Carlos Fonseca also said it is necessary to transform the Portuguese language “more and more” into a “working tool in the most important international organizations”.

“And that our young people make it an essential tool for the acquisition of knowledge and their training as men and women, capable of guaranteeing a better, freer, more supportive and fairer world”, he concluded.

CPLP Angola – which this year assumes its rotating presidency -, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, Portugal and East Timor are members.
