Guterres proposes six actions to save the planet
“The impact of the coronavirus is immediate and terrible. But there is another deep emergency, the planet’s environmental crisis. (…) We must act decisively to protect our planet, both from the coronavirus and from the existential threat of climatic disturbances”, defended the UN leader.
“Subsidies for fossil fuels must end and polluters must start paying” for their actions, he said, also proposing that “when taxpayers’ money is used to rescue companies it must be linked to obtaining green jobs and sustainable growth”, said Guterres.
In a video published on the multimedia sharing platform Youtube, Guterres suggested that “the fiscal power (…) should lead to a change from the gray to the green economy and make societies and people more resilient”, also recommending that “funds be used to invest in the future, not in the past, and flow into sustainable sectors and projects that help the environment and the climate “.
