When the Magnifica cruise left Genoa, Italy, on January 5, the world was very different than it is today. The “new pneumonia”, as it was called at the time, had no name yet. The World Health Organization still had no record of deaths from the disease and only 59 people had been infected, all in Wuhan, China. Most of the Magnifica’s 1,760 passengers – mainly Italians, French and Germans – had not heard of the virus. And so they went on for some time, excited about the trip, while watching the sunset at the Bar del Sole on the boat or eating at the Quattro Venti restaurant.
