According to data collected by the French news agency at 19:00 TMG (20:00 Lisbon) to date 2,135,410 cases of contamination have been officially diagnosed in 193 countries and territories since the beginning of the epidemic in December 2019 in China.

AFP warns, however, that the number reflects only a fraction of the actual total carriers of the virus, as many countries are testing only those situations that require hospital care.

Of the total number of confirmed cases of infection, at least 465,700 are now considered cured.

Since counting at 19:00 GMT on Wednesday, 9,490 new deaths and 101,787 new cases have been reported worldwide.

The countries with the most deaths in the last 24 hours are the United States (4,505), followed by the United Kingdom (861) and France (753).

The United States, which recorded its first coronavirus-related death at the end of February, is the country most affected in terms of number of deaths and cases, with 31,590 deaths for 648,788 cases, while 53,489 people were declared cured by US authorities. .

The remaining countries where the highest number of deaths were reported are Italy, with 22,170 deaths (168,941 cases), Spain, with 19,130 ​​deaths (182,816 cases), France, with 17,920 deaths (165,027 cases) and the United Kingdom, with 13,729 deaths (103,093 cases).

China (excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macau) officially accounted for a total of 82,341 cases (46 new cases between Wednesday and today), of which 3,342 were fatal and 77,892 were cured.

Since 19:00 GMT on Wednesday, Guinea, Eswatini (ex-Swaziland) and Eritrea have announced the first deaths related to the new coronavirus, which causes the covid-19 disease.

Europe totaled 92,941 deaths at 19:00 GMT today, for 1,082,930 cases, the United States and Canada 32,803 deaths (678,698 cases), Asia 5,391 deaths (153,340 cases) and the Middle East 5,260 deaths (113,977 cases) ), Latin America and the Caribbean 3,702 deaths (80,706 cases), Africa 951 deaths (18,033 cases) and Oceania 79 deaths (7,730 cases).

This assessment was carried out using data collected by the AFP offices of the competent national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO).

In Portugal, 629 people died of the 18,841 registered as infected, being the 16th country in the world in number of deaths and also the 16th in number of infected.
